iPod Touch - Tips and Tricks for the Perfect PDA

iknow I finally bit the bullet and picked up a new 16GB iPod Touch as a birthday present for myself and would have to say without a doubt that this is probably the perfect PDA for any Mac user (or PC user, to be honest). Out of the box, it's a great multimedia player by itself, but after jailbreaking the iPod Touch, it really starts to shine. Not only does it allow you to surf the web, manage your schedule, keep a handle on your contacts, but enabling the Mail application and an IMAP-enabled mail provider like Google turns the iPod Touch into as close to a handheld computer as you can get without the ugly geekiness and technically painful factor that haunts the Windows Mobile platform devices.

Hacking the Apple TV

The highly touted Apple TV has been out for less than a week and despite its apparent claimed weaknesses, it's pretty clear that those were for appearances only and in fact, the Apple TV is capable of much more.

Already, the internal 40GB hard drive is already shown to be upgradeable with both Engadget and Gizmodo posting their experiences.

There have also been initial reports of being able to install Xvid as well as OS X Automator-savvy solutions already being published on how to easily convert "non-compatible" video formats to something that the Apple TV can play.

Apple has pulled a quick one over the DRM-crazy folks by getting this one under the radar with the seemingly restrictive specs that it would "only" play content from the iTunes Store. If those parties actually fell for that, they truly are stupider and non-understanding of their customer base than we think...

Macbook, Front Row, and Xvid Playback

I recently purchased a brand new Apple MacBook and love just about everything about it. Since this is my first time to have hands-on experience with Front Row, I quickly tracked down the necessary Xvid codecs to enable playback of .avi/Xvid file in Front Row.

Simply download the Intel Binary of XviD/Avi Import Components file, drop the Xvid Codec and AviImporter file into ~/Library/Quicktime (or root Library folder for all user access), and playback of these files is available through Quicktime and Front Row immediately.
