Techniques For Success

While it's easy to simply sign up for an AdSense account, throw the code in, and wait for the ad revenue to start rolling in, what's even more important is the need to stay focused on what works and doesn't work for your website.

Since you can change the placement, size, and color of your AdSense ads, there are some basic techniques that are recommended for getting good results. Here's a short list.

a. CHOOSE THE BEST ADSENSE AD LOCATION
Google has a nice chart that shows the common layout and best locations for ad placement on a web page:

Personal experience has indicated that the hot orange spot preceding an article and the skyscraper that follows the length of the article work best; however, it really depends on your site layout and content. Don't be afraid to play around with different layouts and see what works best.

b. USE THE OPTIMUM ADSENSE AD FORMAT
AdSense ads come in a variety of different shapes and sizes; of course, you have to pick what works best for your layout, but generally, wider ads do better than taller ads.

c. USE THE RIGHT ADSENSE AD COLOR SCHEME
While initially, super contrast and making your ads stand out from the page may have worked, I believe that ad blocks that complement the existing color scheme on your website work best. Call attention to the Adsense ads through the use of changing color schemes (you can do up to four different colors per ad component), but keep these colors complementary to your site.

d. ORGANIZE AND OPTIMIZE THE ADSENSE ADS
Last, but probably most important is keeping track of your ads through the use of AdSense channels. Under a single Adsense account (you really shouldn't need more than one), you can track up to 50 unique channels. When you create an ad unit for a website, you can assign a channel to that specific ad so that when you review your ad performance, it's easy to see if the skyscraper ads did better than the inline rectangles. I use a naming nomenclature that keeps things easy to follow (site.adunitname) which makes it easy to see the changes.
